What's the Best Time of Year to Clean Gutters in the UK?

Late autumn: the essential clean

The single most valuable gutter clean of the year happens in late autumn — November in most of the North West — after the leaves have finished falling. This clears the full autumn leaf drop plus a year's worth of moss, silt and debris, leaving gutters empty and free-flowing for winter's heaviest rain.

Clean too early (September) and October's leaves undo the work. Clean in late November or early December and you're protected through the worst of winter.

Spring: the smart second clean

A spring clean (March–April) clears winter's debris — moss dislodged by frost, twigs from storms, silt washed down — and sets gutters up for spring showers. It's particularly worthwhile if you have overhanging trees, or if your gutters blocked at any point over winter.

Two cleans a year — spring and late autumn — is the gold standard for UK homes, and it's what we recommend to customers with trees near the house.

When should you clean gutters urgently, whatever the month?

Don't wait for the calendar if you spot these signs:

• Water pouring over the gutter edge in rain
• Plants or grass growing in the gutter
• Damp patches appearing on walls below the gutter line
• Gutters visibly sagging or pulling away from the wall
• Water dripping from gutter joints that used to be dry

The worst time to clean gutters

Mid-autumn, while leaves are still falling, is the least effective time — you'll pay for a clean that nature undoes within weeks. If your gutters are already overflowing in October, book a clearance, but plan the full maintenance clean for after leaf fall.
