What Happens If You Never Clean Your Gutters?

By R.R.M External Cleaning Specialist · 5 October 2026 · 6 min read

It's easy to forget gutters exist — until they remind you. Here's what actually happens, stage by stage, when gutters go years without cleaning. We've seen every one of these on real jobs across Newton-le-Willows.

Stage 1: Slow drainage (months 6–12)

Leaves, moss and silt build up. Water still drains, but slowly. You might notice drips from joints in heavy rain. Nothing looks dramatic — which is why most people ignore it.

Stage 2: Overflow (year 1–2)

Outlets block. In heavy rain, water pours over the gutter edge like a waterfall — straight down your brickwork. This is the point where damage starts: saturated bricks, eroded mortar, and damp tracking into internal walls.

Stage 3: Weight damage (year 2–3)

A metre of waterlogged debris is astonishingly heavy. Gutters sag, brackets bend or pull out of the wall, and joints split open. Plants take root in the compost-like sludge — we've pulled small saplings out of gutters.

Stage 4: Structural and interior damage (year 3+)

Chronic overflow rots wooden fascias and soffits, saturates wall cavities, and causes internal damp and mould. Water dumping at the base of walls erodes soil around foundations. In winter, trapped water freezes, expands and splits gutter joints. Repair bills at this stage run into the thousands.

The cheap fix

Every stage above is prevented by a £75–£150 clean once or twice a year. Gutter cleaning is probably the highest return-on-investment maintenance a UK homeowner can buy.
