How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned in the UK?

By R.R.M External Cleaning Specialist · 28 September 2026 · 5 min read

The textbook answer is once a year. The real answer depends on your trees, your roof, and where in the UK you live. Here's how to work out the right schedule for your home.

The baseline: once a year

Every UK home should have its gutters cleaned at least once a year — ideally in late autumn after leaf fall. This is the minimum that keeps outlets clear and prevents the slow build-up that causes overflows.

When twice a year is the right call

Book spring and autumn cleans if any of these apply:

  • Overhanging trees within a few metres of the roof
  • You've had a blockage or overflow in the last two years
  • North-facing or heavily shaded gutters (moss grows year-round)
  • You live in a high-rainfall area like the North West
  • The property is rented out — landlords have a duty to maintain gutters

The North West factor

Around Newton-le-Willows we get roughly 900mm of rain a year plus persistent damp air — ideal moss-growing conditions. Gutters here genuinely fill faster than in drier parts of the country. Most of our regular customers are on a twice-yearly schedule, and their gutters prove why: even six months of North West weather deposits a surprising amount of silt and moss.

Signs your schedule isn't frequent enough

If you see plants growing in the gutter, water overtopping in normal (not storm) rain, or damp patches below the gutter line between scheduled cleans, shorten the interval. The gutters are telling you once a year isn't enough.
