7 Signs Your Gutters Need Cleaning (Don't Ignore #4)

By R.R.M External Cleaning Specialist · 20 September 2026 · 5 min read

Gutters fail quietly, then suddenly. Learn the seven warning signs and you'll catch blockages while they're a £100 clean, not a £2,000 damp repair.

1. Water pouring over the edge in rain

The classic sign. If water cascades over the gutter like a waterfall while it's raining, an outlet or downpipe below that point is blocked. This is urgent — every storm is soaking your brickwork.

2. Plants growing in the gutter

Grass, weeds or even saplings growing from the gutter means months of compacted compost-like debris. It's well past time for a clearance.

3. Damp patches on walls below the gutter line

Brown or dark patches on internal walls just below ceiling level, or on external brickwork under the gutters, usually trace back to overflowing or leaking gutters.

4. Gutters sagging or pulling away

Waterlogged debris is enormously heavy. Sagging runs and gutters pulling away from the fascia mean the brackets are failing under the load — clean them now before brackets snap and the whole run needs replacing.

5. Water dripping from joints

Joints that used to be dry now dripping in rain suggests seals have failed — often because standing water has been sitting against them for months.

6. Staining on the brickwork

Green algae streaks or dark tide-marks on bricks below the gutter line show where water has been regularly overflowing.

7. Birds and pests showing interest

Birds nesting in gutters, or wasps and insects attracted to the damp debris, are nature's way of telling you there's a habitat up there that shouldn't be.
